Our Philosophy
Our enduring slogan, “respecting children since 1950” simply reflects our philosophical approach in working with children and what we strive to convey to them. We believe all children embrace and model this approach for others and in turn will empathize and respect others. We believe that children will more than adequately rise to meet the challenges of life when given loving support from a community of caring adults that respect them and trust in them. We believe that with this experience as their foundation, at their own pace, young children will be primed to develop their sense of self, learn to take risks as well as understand limits, experience a diverse community, become problem-solvers and critical thinkers and acquire the self-confidence to reach for their potential in life.
Sounds like a tall order? Yes, it certainly is, but with the parent and teacher learning partnership as the guiding principle of our cooperative nursery school, ANS parents and teachers continually learn how to do this together, as a community. The dedicated educators at ANS work in partnership with the families and each other to learn about the children in their care and then utilize what they learned so that the children benefit from many perspectives.
This learning community that began over a half a century ago has grown and blossomed because we have remained true to our first and simple philosophy. We believe in respecting children, period.
And the way in which the children and their families have responded to this philosophical approach continues to inspire us, generation after generation.

Parent Education
The most important and dynamic parent education ANS offers is the time you spend as a working parent during your workdays. As our history and philosophy reflect, we are committed to being a place of enrichment and education for the entire family. While your children are gently guided toward greater confidence and independence, you can also take advantage of the Parent Education opportunities we offer to enhance your parenting toolbox.

Traditions
ANS also loves to learn and take part in the traditions and holidays of our membership families. We do this by inviting families to share their cultural traditions at school with either their child’s class or the entire school. Sharing a family tradition is a very meaningful experience for the child who is sharing and helps children to make important social connections to their classmates and their teacher. Our staff, in partnership with the family, will plan a simple, age appropriate celebration that celebrates the uniqueness of each family, promotes the children's’ cultural understanding and helps all the children to enjoy and feel part of the greater world. Some of the holidays that our families have celebrated and shared with us include Saint Lucia Day, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year, Chanukah, Persian New Year, and Passover.
Over the years we have also created our own school traditions. In addition to a large Stone Soup Party held each November which is lovingly prepared by the children and teachers, we have two other long-standing and beloved events at ANS. First is our Winter Party, this includes a musical guest to start things off with, a potluck and then a visit from Santa. Second, is our Spring Party which is a simple egg hunt and a visit from the Spring Bunny (usually a volunteer parent) and some time spent together as a community. All of these school traditions (Halloween Parade, Field Trips, etc.) are optional and are planned to allow families to participate in part of or all of the scheduled activities and enjoy time spent together as a family as well as part of a larger school community.
Kindergarten Forum
For many years ANS has hosted a kindergarten forum to help inform parents of the variety of options available to graduating students. We hear from schooling options that run the gamut, from homeschooling to local public, private and charter schools.
